Why write romance?

When people find out I’m a romance novelist one of the first questions they always ask is “Why write romance?” Luckily, it’s a question that’s very easy for me to answer—my favorite thing to write about is people falling in love and I could never write a book that didn’t have a happy ending—love story + happy ending = romance.

I’ve always been fascinated by people, so much so that I have a masters degree in clinical social work counseling. As much as I enjoyed working as a therapist, helping people sort through their problems and, hopefully, giving them the tools to make their lives better, that was real life. And real life doesn’t always work out the way people want it to. Bad things happen and sometimes no one can make them better.

Everyone has problems, including fictional characters. That’s what makes them interesting and relatable. A story where everything goes right for every character, all the time, would be boring. Struggles show what a person is made of and the way they handle the most difficult situations defines them. When characters go through angsty, gut-wrenching times readers (and writers) go along for the ride with them, gasping at the shocking news they receive, holding their breath at the tense moments, sniffling through the sad ones.

I do the same thing with my real-life friends—spend hours listening when they have problems, cry with them when tragedy strikes, hold their hands to give them courage—but I can’t make everything better. I can’t guarantee them that everything will be okay, because I’m not in charge. When I’m writing, though, I am in charge. No matter how much befalls my character I can make certain that in the end everyone is happy. That’s why I write romance. When it’s up to me, everyone gets their happy ending.
