Blog Tour – Jingle Spell by Christ Ethan
It’s the most horrible time of the year.
Smooches under mistletoes and tacky reindeer decorations.
Newly single, Davey has had enough of wasting his love and having his heart broken. Better to be single, he decides. No more dates. No more falling in love. No more dreaming of happy ever afters. Those are for movies.
And then Avery steps into his life, bringing care, compassion, and tenderness in his path.
Davey’s so tempted to hope again. But can an online date and a brief encounter turn into anything other than an ephemeral sexual encounter?
Is there a future for them? Will Avery stay? And most importantly, can Davey bear to offer up his heart to the season’s love—just one more time?
“What’s wrong? Who is that?” asked Davey, his stomach clenching as if it was being encased in a tight fist and suspicion curled up to his lungs.
Avery didn’t move, nor did his gaze. “That’s my ex,” he said, and the fist in Davey’s stomach clenched tighter, stronger, making him want to fold in two.
“Wh-what’s he doing here?” he said after a moment.
“I have no clue,” Avery replied and started walking towards the guy.
Davey wasn’t sure if he was supposed to follow or stay behind. He wasn’t sure what was happening and what made Avery so upset. He decided to chase after Avery and catch up to him.
“I see you wasted no time,” the guy told Avery with a smirk in his face.
“What are you doing here?” Avery yelled.
The man ran his fingers through his blonde hair and took joy in the moment. “I just thought I’d visit. Do you not want me here?” he asked.
Avery looked away from him. “You couldn’t call?”
“I wanted to talk. In person,” he responded, his casualness shrinking away.
Avery still avoided looking at the man. “What could we possibly have to talk about, Kyle?”
Kyle shrugged and looked at Avery again. “Can we—do this inside? It’s kinda cold out here,” he said.
Davey wasn’t sure if he was needed or if he was being a voyeur, standing there between two former lovers who obviously still had feelings for each other, although whether those feelings matched he wasn’t so sure about just yet.
“I’ve got company,” Avery said, now daring to look at Kyle in the face.
“I can go,” Davey said breathless and composed himself. “I will go.”
Avery looked at him. “No, you don’t have to.”
“It’s okay. I’m beat, anyway. I guess I’ll see you later,” he said and wasn’t sure if he should kiss him goodbye or just leave it altogether. He definitely wanted to, but Kyle’s stare was burning his face, and he wasn’t sure Avery wanted to kiss in front of his ex.
He set off back the way they’d come and climbed down the subway. All the while he tried to imagine all the possible outcomes of what had just happened. His heart thumped with dread.
