The Running Game by LE Fitzpatrick

Her father called it the running game. Count the exits, calculate the routes. Always be ready to run because they’ll always be coming for you. Whatever happens, they’ll always be coming for you.

Rachel had let her guard down and they had found her. She could run now, leave the city and try her luck beyond the borders, but with no money and a dark secret to hide her chances of survival are slim.

But then she meets two brothers with a dangerous past and secrets of their own. Can they help her turn the game around?

This is the first installment of the Reacher series. Set in a grim and not too distant future, this urban thriller will keep you hooked until the last page.

Border Lines

“We all remember that kid in Piccadilly. That determined look he had on his face as he willed all those people to him. Just using his mind he pulled them close then blew them all to pieces. It could be anyone. Your neighbour, your friend, your lover. Remain vigilant. Reachers are everywhere.”

When the perfect job comes up Charlie doesn’t think twice about taking it. This is the break he’s been looking for and nobody, not even the rest of his team, can persuade him otherwise.

The job means working for an old enemy and crossing the border into London. Both are risky but Charlie has no idea how high the stakes really are.

The team will have to confront their past, each other and a killer who is closer than they realise. But can they all make it out of the city alive?

This is the second installment in the Reachers series.

Interview with LE Fitzpatrick

1. The Reachers series brings to life a very interesting dystopian future. Is that how you see our world evolving? Or should I say devolving?

The devolving world the Reachers series is set in is about 50 years in the future and it’s a lot different to what we currently have in Britain, but when I was planning my world I wanted it to be as real as possible. The chain events that broke Britain weren’t the usual type of natural catastrophes, but instead were all based on extreme cases of things that had already happened. The economic downturn, changes and issues in farming and food production, diseases, and extreme fanatical governments have all happened in the last ten years and show no sign of going away. So I guess if things go from bad to worse my future might happen – I just hope we have Reachers by then.

2. How did you get the idea of the Reachers and their powers?

Just like the world they are set in I wanted Reachers to be realistic – or as realistic as any type of being with special powers could be. I know that as humans we only use a tiny proportion of our brain and so it just seemed… well a no-brainer to give Reachers psychic abilities.

3. Whenever people display superhuman abilities, they are being targeted. Do you think the world will ever evolve enough that we don’t turn those who are different into lab rats? Or will is always be as it is in your books?

I think whenever there is a powerful minority people will fear them. People are scared of what is different and what they don’t understand. In my series the government claim to hunt Reachers because they’re a threat to society, but in truth they want to use Reachers as weapons. Unfortunately, with the world as it is I think this is probably what governments and corporations are most interested in when it comes to any type of super power.

4. What should we expect from book 3 in the series? Is there ever going to be some romance?

Book 3 is going to be explosive. There are a lot of new characters and we are going to learn a lot more about Charlie and John’s past. And also you get to meet the big bad – the Institute. As for romance … well book 3 is still in draft but so far there has only been a bit of kissing. If you want real romance you’ll have to wait for book 4.

5. Other than this series, are you working on any other books?

The Reachers series takes up most of my time, but I do work on books for other authors as an editor and proofreader and I’ve been fairly busy helping with a few projects, but they’re all still in the early stages of production at the moment.

6. The Reachers series is a mix of many genres, from scifi to mystery and back again. Do you enjoy crossing genre borders?

I write what I like and I like a lot of crime, a lot of sci-fi and a good adventure. For me the best stories are the ones that don’t just stick to the confines of their genre. I’m much happier if my crime novels have a paranormal twist, or there’s a thriller element to my fantasy. These are great stories to read and right, but a marketing nightmare.

7. Is there any genre that you haven’t tried yet but want to?

I’d love to write a steampunk novel. The steampunk imagery is amazing and some of the fiction is really exciting at the moment. I’ve also been wanting to write a local history crime novel, but that will take a level of research I just don’t have time for… but one day…

8. What is your favorite part about writing? What about reading?

My favourite part of writing is the second draft. My first drafts are very scatty and erratic, but the second draft pulls the story together. I know where I’m going and I can concentrate on making the book a good read. I’m also a bit sad and I love the final editing stage (even the formatting, which most people hate).

But when it comes to reading my favourite thing is getting the next part in a series. In fact this week my favourite author John Connolly is just about to release his new book and I’m poised and ready to take a day out to read it from cover to cover – well apart from the last few chapters, I drag them out for as long as I can because I hate it when a good book is over.

About the author

L E Fitzpatrick was born in Hull, East Yorkshire, but now lives in West Wales, with her family plus lots of dogs and cats. She manages an office, volunteers as a room steward for the National Trust and also supports independent authors as a proofreader and beta reader. She obviously has no spare time because of this, but if she did it would probably be invested in walking in the countryside and enjoying the peace and quiet.

L E Fitzpatrick published her first series Dark Waters in 2011 and is currently working on her Reacher series.
