Inside Evil is a paranormal mystery set in a small town on the borders of England and Scotland. Like so many similar places, its residents cannot help but be drawn into each other’s lives, as they rarely venture from their seclusion. But, with such isolation comes danger, and whilst the world is blissfully unaware, an ancient terror is preparing for murder.

Inside Evil – Synopsis

Life in the secluded town of Ridgewood is charming, simple, safe – isn’t it? The bubble that isolates the hamlet protects, or so the eclectic residents believe. Lurking in the background of everyday life is a curse that comes in cycles and picks off the innocent as it pleases. But this time there’s something different, this time the curse wants more.

Interview with Geoffrey Wakeling

Inside Evil is a lengthy, intricate story. How long did it take you to write the first four books?

I published Inside Evil in March 2012, but the first novel was conceived long before that, so I’d say about four or five years overall. I always had plot points in my mind, story-arcs that had to happen, but a lot of the intricate details developed along the way too; making it even more challenging. Book 5, ‘To Kill A Curse’, has been the hardest of all, and has taken about 8 months in itself to bring all the pieces of the story together.

The forest and nature in general play a big part in the Inside Evil story. Is that because of your academic background or because of all the myths and legends surrounding it?

I just LOVE forests. And nature. And trees. And wildlife. If you read any of my books, you’ll note there’s always creatures and open spaces somewhere. Forests seem to be naturally ominous, mysterious places, so have a secluded town that’s surrounded by forest and unyielding weather seemed perfect for a fantasy mystery that involves horror elements.

I’m a qualified zoologist; nature’s in my soul. So its natural to bring it into my stories too because without greenery and creatures I’d be empty.

Is there a real life inspiration for the secluded town of Ridgewood?

Ridgewood wasn’t based on any one particular town, but a collection of memories from exploring the Lake District and Scotland during childhood holidays. My family never went abroad; it was always a long car ride to the north. I can remember those motorways, and all of sudden the hills would start to rise and dry stone walls would start to creep in. It makes me excited just thinking about it.

I wanted to plop Ridgewood in the centre of this and make this quaint and isolated town one of cobblestone alleyways, little stone houses and charm; behind which is a dark and deadly evil.

Did you use people you know as inspiration for the characters in this series?

Of course, doesn’t every writer?! I wouldn’t say any one character is one person, but more a collection of characteristics from people’s I know, or have known. For example, traits of Susan are taken from my godmother, whilst a very good friend of mine throws tea parties exactly as Martha would do. Roberta has part of my mind too; a longing to do what’s right but a constant need to quantify everything and hold back on her heart.

There’s a constant buildup of thrill and mystery throughout the series. How hard is it to create that feeling of constant threat and unease?

You know, I didn’t really know I was doing it – I was just writing the story! I’m glad the unease has come through and that there is the darkness of threat in the background at all times. But I hope there are lighter shades too; the joy of friendship, the magic of strange creatures and the fascination of new worlds.

With all the characters in the story and the different planes of existence, did you have to use extensive tools or story outlines to keep track of it all?

I have pieces of paper, post-its, cards and large diagrams like spiderwebs ALL over my hosue. If you open any half used notebook, you’ll probably find scribblings of Inside Evil. It’s not like me at all; I’m very organised. I wouldn’t say I used extensive tools because almost everything was locked away in my mind. I’d just write down bullet points to unlock my thoughts and rediscover what I’d dreamt of! lol.

What should we expect from book 5 of the series?

It’s almost done, and as the final, as you might expect, all the threads will finally come together. You’ll learn more of the curse and the complexities around it; where it came from, how original creatures are formed etc. Everyone has a conclusion to their story, whether good or bad. And it might not end up how you think.
